Indianapolis participated in Twestival 2009 by having a rolling TweetUps at 8 different locations in town at various times: @DouglasKarr hosted the first one at the Bean Cup 9:00am and @dirtynap rounded out the day at midnight at Ike & Jonesies.  A total of 53 tweeters met at one (or more) of the locations.

If you are wondering, “What the heck is a TweetUp?” the Urban Dictionary defines it as:

1) An organized or impromptu gathering of people that use Twitter.
2) A gathering of nerds attempting social contact, likely for the first time. Usually disintegrates into everyone running to the nearest computer to type to one another.

There are four different ways to participate:

1) Be an Event Sponsor (e.g. bar, restaurant, coffee shop, health food market, etc…)
Requirements include:

• a place where 3-15 people can sit and order food or beverages-or just hang out and talk for about an hour
• a small tax-deductible donation to Concern Worldwide (Minimum $25 we strongly recommend $50)
• permission to use your logo on the http://indianapolis.twestival.com site
• a jar of some sort where attendees can donate $1.00 and a business card for a drawing to be held on 26th
• a public restroom

As an Event Sponsor you should expect:

• 3-15 customers eating, drinking or shopping
• customers tweeting from your location
• possible live video streaming during the event which will be seen worldwide
• placement on the http://indianapolis.twestival.com web site as an Event Sponsor
• pre-event tweets that will drive traffic to your website

2) Be an Event Host!
Requirements include:

• Act as the twestival go-to person at the TweetUp
• handle and guard the donation jar
• make sure attendees enter at least one tweet on the 25th that has the hashtag #IndyTwestival and the Space Sponsors name in it.

3) Be a participant!  Go to an actual event and hang out with other twitter geeks.

4) Be a promoter!

Suggestions:

• send out a tweet or two about the event directing folks to the http://indianapolis.twestival.com web site for locations and times
• follow @IndyTwestival
• tweet the hashtag #IndyTwestival in a tweet or two on the 25th
• donate money for this worthy cause through the paypal button on the http://indianapolis.twestival.com site.

This event is an all-volunteer effort and all donations will go directly to Concern Worldwide to help build schoolhouses in Africa because every child deserves an education.

Twestival provides a great opportunity for restaurants, cafes and bars to get exposure to social media leaders in the city as well as raise money for a good cause.

It only BEGAN with Hubbard & Cravens, now it’s a city-wide event where tweeters from all over the Greater Indianapolis Metropolitan Area will participate at different times of the day.

I focused my attention on twitter, but luckily Nicki knows her way around facebook, and she ignited a thriving #Twestival community there. Check it out!

Indy TweetUp will not be a Fundraising event, but rather an “Awareness Raising Event” , a brainstorming event, and a light networking event.  That doesn’t mean, “Don’t Give”, it simply means, “Don’t feel pressured to give.”

We’re meeting at the Hubbard & Cravens in Broad Ripple (6229 Carrollton) at 8:30am. We had 10 people attend the last Indy tweetup at H&C, and it lasted about 2 1/2 hrs. There were lively discussions and it reminded me of my college days, when I would hang out with professors in the Lounge and solve the world’s problems.

@warrenwhitlock says they have a Big One in Las Vegas — Twestival that is– and he is a member of Smaller Indiana.   Dropping him a quick tweet may be a very good idea =)  He “Gets” twitter and LOTS of people trust him.

Please tweet it up a few times, and BE SURE TO POUND Indiana ( #Indiana ) in a tweet or two. The #Indiana tweet stream is coming along nicely, and there are some wonderful entries. Check it out.
